Welcome to the Picture Palace Campaign

15 November 2017 – Important Message from the Picture Palace Campaign

The Picture Palace Campaign is the campaign to restore the cinema to Crystal Palace for the benefit of the whole community. We believe a new cinema will be a resource to improve the quality of life in and beyond Crystal Palace.

Cinema mixes commerce and culture, art and entertainment. The right cinema provides something for everyone.

We will work to bring the whole community together to support the development of a new cinema for Crystal Palace.

We are a community-led campaign supported by local residents, traders, our ward councillors, London Assembly members and local MPs.

We have successfully campaigned to ‘Save 25 Church Road‘ from ‘change of use’ to a Place of Worship, first in 2009 and again in March 2015.

Built originally as the Rialto cinema, 25 Church Road is the last remaining dedicated D2 ‘Assembly & leisure’ venue and only registered ‘Asset of Community Value‘ in Crystal Palace. We would love to see a cinema restored there and are working towards this whilst continuing to explore all other opportunities for a cinema in Crystal Palace.

Kingsway International Christian Centre, a religious charity, purchased the building in 2009 taking it out of leisure use for the first time in over eighty years.

In September 2015, they lodged an appeal against Bromley council’s refusal of planning permission involving the change of use of 25 Church Road from Use Class D2 (Assembly and leisure) to mixed-use comprising Class D1 (Place of Worship, Conference and Non Residential religious education and training centre) and Class D2 (Assembly and Leisure) use.

On 21 April 2016 the Planning Inspector comprehensively dismissed KICC’s appeal.

This is a significant milestone in keeping the building available for proper, public entertainment use, as it should be.

Please take the time to look at the video local residents made in 2009 which captures how locals feel about the possibility of a cinema returning to Crystal Palace.
